5 Reasons You Need to Visit Lake Como
Lake Como is one of the most beautiful places in Italy. Only about an hour or so away from Milan, it is a place you definitely want to add to your list of places to visit if you have time. I think even a day trip is worth it. I was truly blown away by the beauty of the water, the garden villas and the colorful villages. Here are 5 reasons you need to visit.
1. The Views
Whether you are in the town, or on a boat everywhere you look is a gorgeous view. Beauty is at an abundance around this lake. Cobblestone, colorful buildings, and the lake in the background make this area one of the most beautiful in the world. I think everyone should experience the beauty of Lake Como at least once in their life.
2. Villas and Gardens
Lake Como is known for the many villas and gardens that surround it. There are so many beautiful places to visit. During our stay we visited Villa Monastero, and Villa Cipressi, wandering through their gardens taking so many pictures. We also took a tour on a venetian water taxi that showed us many villas from the lake, including Villa del Balbianello.
3. The Lake!
The best part about visiting the lake in summer is being able to swim in it. We were lucky that our hotel had a beach in front of it, and got to dip our toes in the water to cool off. I would recommend going on as many boats as you can. You can visit so many beautiful villages this way. I feel like this is the perfect way to spend summer. One of our favorite days was spending a few hours walking through Bellagio, then heading to Lido di Bellagio for a few hours for some sun and lake. We also ate breakfast by the lake every morning. Nothing better than that!
4. Delicious Italian Food
Need I say more? Italy in general has some of the best food I have eaten during my travels, but the food in Lake Como was incredibly fresh and delicious. Between pasta, pizza, fresh fish, cheese and meats, there is plenty to munch on while you are exploring these beautiful villages.
5. See the Non-Touristy Side of Italy
What I really loved about visiting Lake Como was the lack of tourists. Compared to a lot of the other places we visited during our 14 day Italy trip (Venice, Rome, Cinque Terre,) Lake Como was definitely one of the more relaxing places. We stayed in Varenna at the Hotel Royal Victoria and that was a great choice in my opinion. The town felt quaint and authentic, and it was easy to access the ferry to visit other lakeside villages.
Visiting Lake Como should be on everyoneโs travel bucket lists. Make sure you plan to visit for at least a day or more when you visit northern Italy. You wont regret it!
